By |November 12th, 2018|Geographic Interest, National Parks, Olympic National Park, Pacific Northwest|

Some of you probably just won't get this next article, and I understand. I'm not sure I would had I not seen this myself. Some of you may get it though, and it's for you I'm writing it. Sea stacks at Second Beach, Olympic National Park, Washington (2011) After years spent dreaming of walking the shores of Olympic National Park I found myself standing on Second Beach September of 2011. Autumn 2017

By |November 8th, 2017|American Southwest, Autumn, Destinations, National Parks, Pacific Northwest, Road Trippin', Rocky Mountain West, Travel Journals|

Autumn has historically been one of the best times of year to travel. The crowds of summer have dwindled and children are back in school. But the fall colors are still there. The crisp bite in the air is still tasted. The smells of damp, downed foliage permeates fresh morning air and autumn light is second to none. Skies come alive as storm systems materialize around the fringes of the seasons. Rates in hotels drop significantly the last week of October and first week of November. Gas prices are usually down. Campgrounds are largely still open and far less crowded. In the quiet absence of crowds, one is free to - if only for a short time - experience a little peace, a little solitude, a little quiet joy.

Looking for nothing specific and driving slowly, the large burls on Beach One's Sitka [...]

For many years I've had a fascination with the Pacific Northwest, and more specifically, Washington state's Olympic Peninsula. A massive colony of life is represented in this scene of mosses and epiphytes (plants growing on other plants without harming the host) clinging to a giant Sitka Spruce in the Hoh Rainforest, Olympic National Park, Washington (2017). One early memory comes from a American Wilderness TIME-LIFE series book given to me one Christmas about [...]
